Finding Belonging, Building Community

January is seen as a time of new beginnings, but winter can also be a trying time. The days are short, third places to connect with others can be harder to access during the coldest months, and seasonal affective disorder hits about 5% of us. A majority of Americans are also stressed over the country’s future and the economy. In the face of hard times and growing loneliness, community is more important than ever.

The difference between “people” and “community” is a shared interest, a sense of reciprocity, a common bond. This year, we would like to invite you to explore the idea of community through reading, reflecting, having conversations, or even visiting local libraries to see what kinds of community connections are out there. Filipino American History Month

The celebration of Filipino American History Month (FAHM) in October commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. FAHM was first celebrated in 1992, and was made official in 2009.

This list of titles explores the historical relationship between the two countries, the Filipino-American immigrant experience, and the current state of the Philippines.
